This is lovely! I’m curious how it’s feeling for you to publish both educational pieces and more literary pieces on the same platform? I’m trying to do the same and it feels a little awkward for me. I don’t know if I should try to fix that feeling by picking a lane and sticking with it, or if I should just roll with the discomfort.
Thanks, Amber! I greatly appreciate your question. Thanks for sharing that it "feels a little awkward" for you! Well, let's see. First of all, I started my "blog" on Substack in November, so I'm still in a bit of an experimental phase. Here's how I'm feeling about it all right now... (and let me know if you can relate?)
.... It feels awkward, exciting, and courageous to be publishing multiple mediums on Substack, particularly as a clinician (in training)/scientist. I feel a little bit afraid that my poetry will somehow disqualify me from being an educator/scientist/doctor (but then I remind myself about Dr. William Carlos Williams)....I'm also publishing "momffirmations" which are weekly affirmations I speak out loud and which offer a vulnerable insight into my own journey of self-confidence; as well "just for laughs" where I share funny pics from my life as a mom.
So, while I started The Mom Diaries to focus on the research topic of "how does friendship (or isolation) in motherhood affect our mental health and well-being?" (still a very important and relevant topic for me), I'm also "experimenting" with some of my other interests, as well.
I'm not ultimately sure if that dilutes my main reason for being here (to discuss/research/interview other moms on this topic of friendship in motherhood), or if it adds depth and richness to the overall tapestry of my blog.
What do you think? :) thanks again for your question.
